6 Modern Day Productivity Tips From The Pros
Despite all the information at our disposal, all the downloadable apps on our phones and all the ways we can now multi-task in 2018, productivity is no easier now than it was back then. The concepts of focus, deep work, working smart still remain one of the most searched things on the Internet and that’s why we’ve collated as many pro tips as we could find that will help you get better results in shorter amounts of time.
“Life is too complicated not to be orderly.” (Martha Stewart)
Pro Tip #1: Prove you truly love your life by not wasting your time…time is the essence of time. We know our life here on Earth is over when the clock officially stops and we are no longer here. Prove you cherish the gift of life by valuing and maximizing your time.
Pro Tip #2: Understand the power of one…Pick one thing and do that one thing—and only that one thing—better than anyone else ever could. Of all the tips you will read, this is the major thing that will truly help your productivity.
Pro Tip #3: Work in solitary confinement…if this means converting your loft or basement into a home office, do what you have to do. If this means purchasing some high quality noise-cancelling headphones, so be it. Whatever you can do to replicate the reality of solitary confinement, you have to get it done now.
Pro Tip #4: Wake up earlier…Your best work will always be done first thing in the morning. It’s a scientific fact. Now, this doesn’t mean you cannot do great work at night. It all depends on your sleeping pattern and what your circadian rhythm (fancy term for sleep cycle) looks like, but generally speaking, it’s easier to seize when you’re actually awake to see it begin.
Pro Tip #5: Rely less on gadgets…and more on pen and paper. The most productive and creatively efficient people in history (think Thomas Edison, Madame CJ Walker, the Wright Brothers, the Egyptians, Leonardo da VInci, Shakespeare, Beethoven, Bill Gates, T.D Roosevelt) never owned a Blackberry, iPad or iPhone. Write down your ideas on paper, switch off your phones, leave your email and Facebook alone and get some work done. Simple.
Pro Tip #6: Break your goals down into micro goals. Many make the mistake of piling up task after task in the hope that the pressure of all of it will push to “do more, quicker”. This is a method that never works. Tactics like this will only leave you stressed, frustrated with yourself and hard to work or live with. Break your goals down as much as you possibly can, analyze each one’s importance and level of urgency. You will often find that the skill requirement isn’t as high as you first thought it was, delegate it to someone else and pay them to do it. Believe us when we say, that money you will spend is way less valuable than the time you will waste.
“Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.” (Paul J. Meyer)
Thomas Watson once asked and answered this really important question: “Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, so go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success.”
Failing forward is not about wasting time or experimenting. It’s about effort and perseverance and consistency. Three things you will need if you want to become a productive machine.
